Understand that, number one, your brain is busy processing all the subconscious tasks in order to make you function every second of every day. Number two, your brain is lazy, because it needs so much energy to process everything that it doesn’t want to do something more and challenging. Third, your brain wants to keep you safe, as that is a survival mechanism that was equipped in us humans millions of years ago when we needed to survive in the wild. So, change is hard because you are wired to expect the worst.
But why is it primordial to learn to get out of your comfort zone? Because…
- The best things happen outside of your comfort zone .
- It will help you create the best memories.
- To use it to learn about you and the universe.
- You’ll be more productive.
- You’ll have an easier time dealing with new and unexpected changes.
- To grow. Like a muscle, you need to stretch it to its limit so that it can then grow.
- To become more mindful and aware about life’s little things.
- To learn to take risks. You’ll need it to achieve your big dreams.
What is something that you’ve been putting off because it brings butterflies to your stomach? Is there a slight fear you have? The energy of your fears literally stay stuck in your kidneys when not confronted. Use the 5 second-rule from Mel Robbins to get yourself out of your comfort zone in the present moment. Once you sense your brain hesitating to take an action you wish you could take now, start counting backward 5–4–3–2–1 and jump. It tricks the prefrontal cortex of your brain, the part used for rational thinking. Once the hesitation sets in, the automatic response of the brain is to stop you from acting because it wants to keep you safe.

- Do it in small steps. Think of a mountain climber; when they begin climbing mountains, they don’t start with Everest. They start with smaller peaks until they build up a tolerance.
- Take three deep breaths. Think of something that brings you great joy. Picture your whole body filling up with a bright glow, like a light bulb, as you think of your great joy.

We may not be aware of how comfortable we are in our comfort zone. The more we take risks in the right ways, the more we reach our next level. Within years, we will be amazed by what we have become and achieved. Never give up, keep striving for the next level of your best version. Life is a beautiful playground to free yourself from your mind and connect with your inner soul.
